Very low cropping levels with the warm days and cool nights characteristic of this region, produce a rich, full-bodied wine with velvety tannins, spice, and great finesse. The Syrah is a first for Ataahua Wines and a variety we are very excited about. The lower terraces with lighter gravelly soils and full sun are ideal for growing this variety and developing full flavoured and concentrated wines.
The fruit is harvested late in the autumn and destemmed before fermentation is in small vats with indigenous yeast, and plunged by hand. The wine is then pressed then matured in French oak barriques for 18 months, during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation.
The bouquet shows plum, wild cherry, dark cocoa, and floral characters with nuances of tamarillo and savoury spice. The palate delivers full fruit concentration and richness, supported by silky texture and fine grained tannins.
