Ataahua 2017 Merlot

A deliciously full red to have with aged beef fillet, seared venison and other rich meats. Very elegant and complex red with ripe plum and blackberry flavours, complemented by hints of liquorice, spice and toasted oak. Excellent concentration.

Ataahua 2017 Merlot

Beautifully ripe and fragrant, the bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry compote, dried herb and toasted almond characters. The palate delivers attractive fruit intensity and smooth mouthfeel, backed by fine, grainy tannins, providing a lingering firm finish. Well balanced and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2022.

Here’s proof that you can make excellent Merlot in the South Island. Hand-picked from 20 year-old vines and barrel-aged for over a year, it has deep, moderately youthful colour. Sturdy, it’s a powerful wine with well-ripened plum, red berry and spice flavours, vibrant and concentrated, and good tannin backbone. Drinking well now, it’s well worth cellaring.
