Ataahua 2011 Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir, being one of the most difficult grapes to grow well, has shown on many occasions to be one of the varieties most suited to the soils and climate of the Waipara Valley, producing exceptional wines of elegance and style. This wine is no exception.Hand harvested in perfect condition the grapes were sorted and destemmed before fermentation, then gently pressed before the resulting wine matured in seasoned French oak barrels. This Pinot Noir has a rich bouquet of ripe berry fruit and cherries with hints of earthy forest floor and mushrooms. The palate is elegantly well balanced with silky tannins and a lingering finish. Serve with Coq au vin or duck and roasted mushrooms.

Raymond Chan Wine Review

A variety of clones, including 10/5, 114 and 115 from vines 18 y.o., fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 3 weeks on skins post fermentation and aged 14 months in seasoned French oak barrels. Dark ruby-red colour with good depth, a little lighter on rim. The nose is full and soft, with gentle aromas of ripe, dark raspberries and plums complexed with notes of earth and savoury, oak cedar. This has good aromatic richness and concentration. Medium-full bodied, this has a solidness of presence and is well-packed with fruit flavours of dark red berry fruits and plums, unfolding nuances of earth, spices and seasoned oak elements on the palate. The acidity is discreet, and with the supple tannin extraction, the mouthfeel is softly rounded. The wine has good energy that carries the flavours through to a sustained finish that features spicy plum fruit and oak. This is a sot, fulsome Pinot Noir with ripe plum and spice flavours to match with Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-themed cuisine over the next 4-5+ years. 17.5+/20.
